Ebel: VILLA TOURBILLON, 2005
by WatchNetwork News, December 15, 2005

A first Tourbillon inspired by the House of Ebel

Two decades after acquiring the legendary Villa Turque, created by the world-renowned architect Le Corbusier, Ebel is introducing a spectacular tourbillon model endowed with the timeless signature features of the literal and figurative House of Ebel.

'A work of art and true architecture', as world-renowned Swiss architect Le Corbusier liked to call his emblematic construction in his home town of La Chaux-de-Fonds, the Villa Turque has naturally been a powerful and enduring source of inspiration for the Architects of Time. A miracle of ageless perfection and majestic equilibrium, it enshrines a vision of architecture that now appears more contemporary than ever with its blend of rigorous straight lines, gentle curves, structural purity and all-pervasive luminosity.

In tribute to this tireless pursuit of perfection, the new Ebel Villa Tourbillon Haute Joaillerie is Ebel's daring interpretation of one of the most alluring horological complications of all, conceived two centuries ago to defy the effects of gravity. This stunning new model combines technical mastery with a wealth of design references to the Villa Turque.

The hexagonal white gold case, inspired by the 1911 collection, presents a very architectural bezel detailed by 5 screws. The dial, composed of baguette-cut citrines, naturally reflects the characteristic ochre shade of the bricks composing the Villa. This color, an integral part of the Ebel brand identity, is also picked up in the matching alligator leather strap. The exquisitely geometrical outlines of the window onto the heart of the dial and the tourbillon mechanism clearly evoke an aerial view of the Villa with its perfect lines and symmetrical structure, while smoothly rounded gear-trains are reminiscent of the interior design of this architectural masterpiece. The elegance and refinement of the Villa Tourbillon are underscored by the slender blue hands sweeping around the hour-markers represented by twelve blue screws, all turned to face the central axis.

Much like the Villa Turque itself, this resolutely innovative creation must be viewed from all angles for the inexhaustible creative genius and consummate technical mastery enshrined in its wealth of details to be fully appreciated. The sapphire crystal case-back further reveals the splendors of the movement, also engraved with elements such as bricks and an oeil-de-boeuf window inspired by its ageless architectural Muse, the Villa Turque.

Faithful to the philosophy and the monument that inspired it, the Villa Tourbillon truly deserves to be called 'A work of art and true architecture' in its own right.
